Sassafras Supports Local Charities – Starting with Big Slick

One of the wonderful things about being a virtual agency with employees spread throughout the country is that you get to learn about the different communities where they live. We have definitely witnessed our team rally behind their favorite sports team (The KU/KENTUCKY rivalry being a big one!) and we all have fun learning about our coworker’s weekend adventures on our morning calls, but what does the team do to give back to the communities they live in and are a part of every day?

Sassafras has always been an advocate of giving back and helping others. This past winter, Geoff and Jenny announced a cool new initiative that’s aimed at helping employees give to a charity that they stand behind in their hometown. Every year three employees will be selected to receive a monetary donation that they can use for a local, worthy charity of their choice. Our first employee to take advantage of this awesome initiative was Sara Rhodes in Kansas City.

Big Slick Charity Weekend in Kansas City

Sara purchased a table at the Big Slick charity weekend and was able to put Sassafras’ generous donation toward the support of Children’s Mercy Hospital. The Big Slick Charity was founded in 2010 by actors Rob Riggle, Paul Rudd, and Jason Sudeikis. It is a fun-filled event that has grown year over year and this year the event raised over $2 million for Children’s Mercy! At the event, they highlighted the story of a little boy at Sara’s son’s elementary school who is now in remission after fighting cancer.

Some of Sara’s personal highlights from the evening were: meeting Angela Kinsey from The Office as well as SNL writer Robert Smigel, and Drew Butera from the Kansas City Royals.

More Giving is in our Future

We think it’s awesome that Sara chose such a deserving charity and we’re grateful to Geoff and Jenny for championing this initiative and giving their employees the opportunity to help out the communities they know and love. It’s just another way that our virtual team is able to stay connected no matter how many miles stretch between us.

We still have two more employees who will be choosing local charities to give to this year. We’re excited to see who they choose and learn more about the communities they call home.
