Meet Our Winter Intern, Megan

This past December – January, Sassafras welcomed Megan Bartolac, a University of Missouri student who interned with us over the winter break. Megan split her time supporting our different account teams with various tasks and did a fantastic job. One thing we really took away from her internship was being able to tap into Megan’s millennial side and hear from a different perspective. That’s always refreshing!

We really enjoyed having Megan join our team over the winter break and hope we’re able to work together again in the future. Here’s more about Megan and her future aspirations.

What’s your story?

I’m a junior studying Strategic Communication at the University of Missouri, originally from Lenexa, KS. My passions include working with people, photography, Kraft Mac & Cheese, dance, popcorn, and chocolate. At Mizzou, I currently work as the Vice President of Public Relations for the Panhellenic Association, Vice President of the American Advertising Federation, and as a group fitness instructor at MizzouRec. In my free time, you can find me binge-watching Law & Order SVU and scrolling through social media. When I grow up (let’s be honest, that never really happens) I hope to work as an account manager at an agency in a big city— I’m really open to traveling to new places!

Tell us about your time with the Sassafras team.

It was incredible! I learned so much about the creative process, how account teams communicate with clients and how an agency functions in an online workspace. Unsurprisingly, I managed to embarrass myself on day one. On our first conference call, I could not figure out the audio for a lengthy 10 minutes. I felt so silly, but the team waited patiently and joked along with me when I finally solved the problem. They were welcoming beyond belief, and I could sense that their friendships ran deeper than just the workplace. My initial impression was “holy cow I’m in over my head” since I hadn’t had much applicable experience prior to starting. But, the dedicated mentors, consistent communication, and exposure to a wide variety of accounts made me feel comfortable and confident in no time. During my month with Sassafras, I sat in on account calls with clients, helped with a bit of copywriting, participated in creative calls, and even wrote a proposal for a client. I really valued that the Sassafras team allowed me to jump right into the real work, and didn’t hesitate to trust me with projects. It was a busy and invaluable way to spend my Christmas Break.

Your hometown postcard- what’s on it?

The Kansas City skyline.

Who is your hero and why?

My grandma Carole! She was sassy, smart, confident and taught me the importance of family and the value of quality time.

What book are you reading right now?

Taking People With You by David Novak

Name an interesting thing about yourself that others might not know.

I have a twin sister but we look nothing alike!

What is your favorite website or app?

I’m an avid Pinterest user! I use it for recipes, DIY ideas and new workouts.

Describe your ideal Saturday.

First, I would get to sleep in! Then, I’d grab a salted caramel mocha at Starbucks, head to the gym for some Zumba or Pilates, eat mac n’ cheese for lunch, and watch movies all afternoon with popcorn! Let’s be honest, the food is the most important part.

You’re leaving town for a very, very long time…where would you dine for your last meal and what would you eat?

Jose Pepper’s! I would get the yellow cheese dip and a grilled chicken quesadilla.
